Carnethy Club Handicap Series & Reports 2024
Previous Years’ Handicaps
What is the Carnethy handicap series? – It is 6 courses in and around Edinburgh/Lothian area created by Carnethy club members. 1 course is run each month between April and September.
Each course will have a timed race on a Wednesday evening. You will also have the chance to run the course over a 2-week period in your own time and self-record.
Final date in range is actual handicap race (if you are doing it) and final virtual time submission.
Emails with details will be sent out ahead of each course start, so you don’t miss out. There will be organised recces for each route.
How do I take part and get a handicap? – If you have a handicap already it will be posted on a Googlesheet ahead of each course start date (see races below for current sheet or look for the relevant tab). If you cannot find your name on the Googlesheet please email hcap@carnethy.com to get a handicap. Include your current predicted flatter 10k or 5k time and/or race result link(s).
Who do I contact? – Any handicap queries please contact Handicapper Andy Lamont hcap@carnethy.com. For post-race social queries please check emails for contact(s).

Handicap Reports 2024Scroll down for individual race results and reports Handicap #1 Two-Faced AllermuirDistance: 6.5km | Ascent: 500m | Duration: 15 days | Race: 70 | Total runners: 86 Eóin was original asked if he wanted to create a handicap course when we were running across The Brothers and Sisters of Kintail in snowy February this year. The marrying of two steep Allermuir climbs was the outcome. The legend of the 5 Sisters of Kintail tells the story of 7 sisters, daughters of a local farmer, two of whom married visiting brothers who said they would send their five other brothers for the remaining five sisters to wed. However, no one returned, and the five remaining sisters agreed for a local wizard to transform them into peaks to preserve their beauty while they waited. Like the sisters, Allermuir on Wednesday race day was a thing of beauty. After all the wind and rain, the course was as good as it had been in the last few weeks. 2 weeks earlier for the recce it had been wet, windy, and unlikely there would be any marrying of actual races times and handicap predictions. Lots of celebration in the end – 58 bettered their handicap prediction. Handicaps wouldn’t be possible without volunteer support. Ken, Claire, Mark, Gordon, Andy S and Andy C (and good luck in the London marathon this weekend), thank you all. Handicap – Top 3 places: Congratulations to Gregor the race and overall winner. Gregor got a kind handicap by own admission. Gregor reckoned handicap may have been based on Carnethy 5 hill race, in one of those epic storm years, since had not raced for a long while.
If any wondering why their position is different from the race, its due to virtual runners being added and few requested early starters having time adjustments. In other news, this handicap course has set a record finisher total with 86, surpassing Woodhouselee 2023 handicap with 81. Please keep coming along to the series and encourage other members and friends and family to get involved. Female – Top 3 Fastest course times
Male – Top 3 Fastest course times

Note to webbers: to keep the generic link to handicaps page as /handicaps/ at year end clone this page as handicaps-*year* with Parent ‘handicaps’, edit the permalink adding in the year eg /handicaps-2018 and add the link to the drop down dates and update immediately (otherwise you get erroneous year link; do this in the text editor otherwise more weirdness happens). Then edit this page to reflect the new current year. Don’t change the (hidden) title or the link will change. The shortcode for adding each handicap is (square bracket)ic_add_posts ids=’xxxx'(square bracket) where xxxx is the post’s ID (and wrap it in square brackets [ ]).
You can find the post ID by editing it and looking at the address or clicking ‘Get shortlink’ and noting the number.
