Race Rules

  1. All competitors must be aged over 18 on 1 January of year of race.
  2. Experience and navigational skills required. Low cloud often covers the Pentlands. You MUST be able to find your way in mist using map and compass. You cannot depend on being able to follow a path or another runner, who may be lost too. Local knowledge an advantage.
  3. The following equipment MUST be carried (checks will be in operation):
    1. Windproof complete body cover
    2. Other body cover appropriate for the weather conditions.
    3. Suitable map and compass.
    4. Whistle
    5. Emergency food
  4. You must have previously completed a ‘short’ or preferably ‘medium’ category ‘A’ race.
(More information on race categories available in a pdf here)
  5. If you see someone in trouble YOU MUST HELP, even if it cost you the race.
  6. To limit suffering by checkpoint marshals and sweepers, as well as runners, if conditions are rough, especially poor visibility and heavy rain, we ask runners taking more than 2 hours 15 mins to reach checkpoint 12 (The Drove Road), to retire and accept a lift to the start/finish.
  7. Runners are not allowed to run with their dogs on the course.

Retirement Procedure

  1. Report to the nearest race marshal if possible.
  2. We recommend using one of the three escape points indicated below.
  3. YOU MUST REPORT TO THE RACE ORGANISER AT THE FINISH. If you do not we MUST come and look for you.

Other Race Information

  1. The course will not be marked.
  2. The course is long, with a lot of climbing, some steep. Some of it is grassy, some on gravel paths, some in deep heather without useful paths.
  3. Maps (either of):
    1. Explorer 344: Pentland Hills, Penicuik & West Linton (1:25000)
    2. Landranger 66: Edinburgh, Penicuik & North Berwick (1:50000)
    3. Harvey Pentland Hills (1:25000)
  4. The organiser recommends trying this course before race day or at least doing some training runs of equivalent height and distance. This race is much harder than over 16 miles of easy country.
  5. Race Control contact number: 07788 876547 (emergency only).
  6. Safe keeping for bags is available. Ask at registeration.
