Route Description
Venue: Woodhouse Farm, Manor,
Peebles (Grid ref 217 378)
(signs from A72, one mile west of Peebles)
Distance: 10 ml, 2300 ft climb (Junior: 6.5 ml, 1300 ft climb).
Marked course.
Snack food and raffle at Sheepdog Trial
Seniors: Woodhouse
Farm to Scrape and back by same route. 10 miles +2300 ft
climb
Juniors:
Woodhouse Farm to Dead Wife's Grave and back by same route. 6.5
ml + 1300 ft
Checkpoints: One only on each course, at the respective turning
point.

From
the start near Woodhouse farm (Grid ref 217 378) at 600 ft the course
ascends through two fields before crossing the public road.
The ascent continues on a section of the waymarked John Buchan
Way
up Glack Hope. At the top
of Glack Hope cross the drystone dyke and turn Left. Thereafter
the route follows vehicle tracks fairly close to the march
dyke
over
White Knowe and Whitelaw
Hill to the dip at 'Dead Wife's Grave' (Gref 189351) where a marshal
is in attendance. This is the turning point for the Juniors'
race
who
should ensure that the marshal
knows their race number. Juniors follow the same route back.
The seniors continue to follow the march dyke and finally a fence
to the top of Scrape hill (G.ref 176325) at 2348 ft. There is, however,
one section where
the path leaves the dyke/fence and skirts the penultimate hill. This
short-cut is recommended (and marked). Runners must call out their
race number to the marshal
before turning for home. Return by the same route exactly.
Runners retiring from the race between Dead Wife's Grave and
Scrape should report to the marshal's vehicle.
The route is marked at intervals throughout.
The bad weather alternative course will follow the same route
but the turning point, rather than being at the top of The Scrape
hill, will be earlier and lower down the hill at NT181332. This
will, of course, be made clear to runners before the start, and
the marshall will be at the new location.

History of the Race
The race began in 1992 as an adjunct to the Manor Water Sheepdog Trials that
had been taking place since 1960 odd.
Originally organised by local farmer John Nash, with local help from "retired
hill runner" Graham Pyatt. Graham took over the organisation after John
died in 1995.
The course has changed little over the years. In 1999 we followed the advice
of runners in 1998 who suggested that the section of road (500m), at the beginning
and end, could be removed by going directly across fields. In 2004 the start
was moved to near Woodhouse Farm allowing easier access to the hill.
