(No changing rooms or showers... are you real fell runners or what ! )

Durisdeer is a peaceful hamlet of a dozen or so houses and a church which nestles into the Lowther Hills and is found just off the A702 which links the M74 (junction 14) with the A76 (Carronbridge). The course is over lovely, grassy border hills, generally very runnable, but has some very steep climbs and descents.

Registration: Race headquarters will be in Church out building which will be obvious once in the tiny village of Durisdeer.

Facilities: Facilities will be basic at this venue, no showers but Scottish champion Brian Marshall will testify to the refreshing qualities of the stream which flows through the village. Portaloos will be available(ladies may be allowed to use the single toilet in the church).

Parking: Is limited, please share if at all possible and DO NOT PARK IN VILLAGE. Parking is in fields immediately adjacent to start/finish/registration & cake/tea tent.

Course: 10.5 miles, 3800ft.
Anyone at the 2007 OMM will be familiar with some of the course. There are 6 checkpoints which will be manned:-
From start climb to CP1 on Black Hill(summit NS894 049) then via ‘Pettylung’ descend steeply, bum sliders beware of rocky sections, to CP2 Dalveen Farm(road crossing NS885 066).
Take track through farm, (this will be the only marked part of the route) to follow Enterkin Burn upstream then bear right up valley to CP3 NW Steygail(col NS892 087).
Descend to CP4 Upper Dalveen(track to cottage NS900 081), cross road then take any route to CP5 Well Hill(summit NS913 065) the direct route climbs steeply over crags, the preferred option seems to contour under roughest ground to Lavern Burn which will guide runners to bottom(ish) of Well Hill.
From here return to Black Hill summit CP6 (i.e. CP1). In poor visibility a fence line kept to your left will lead back to Black Hill (but by warned, the fence DOES NOT go to the summit) then a lovely grassy descent to finish & cakes.

Important information
  1. The course will not be marked (except through Dalveen Farm)
  2. Experience and navigational skills required. Low cloud often covers the hills. You MUST be able to find your way in mist using map and compass. You cannot depend on being able to follow a path or another runner, who may be lost too. Local knowledge an advantage.
  3. The following equipment MUST be carried (checks will be in operation):
    1. Windproof complete body cover
    2. Other body cover appropriate for the weather conditions.
    3. Suitable map and compass.
    4. Whistle
  4. IF YOU RETIRE, YOU MUST REPORT TO THE START/FINISH.
  5. Maps (any of):
    1. O.S. Explorer 329: Lowther Hills (1:25000)
    2. O.S. Landranger 78: Nithsdale and Annandale (1:50000)
    3. The 2007 OMM race map
  6. Tea and Cakes available afterwards !
Malcolm Patterson makes heavy weather of crossing the fence just before CP2 ! Adam Anderson shows how it should be done, using the speed from the steep descent of Pettylung While Sandy Bennet uses the one hand technique ! Tim Lenton after crossing the road on way to CP5 in 2004 race
