NOT THE WORLD VETS
Over an extended weekend 20th-25th September, the Carnethy Zimmer Club John
Blair-Fish (vet 50-55), Colin Pritchard (vet 55-60), and Alex Menarry (vet
65-70) successfully climbed all the 11 mountains of Ireland over 3000 feet
ably assisted by Ann Pritchard and Barbel Burns. John and Alex have now climbed
all the hills in Britain and Ireland over 3000 feet. John was inspired to
organise the trip by two visits 30 years ago to the mountains of Kerry and
South West Ireland and the offer of cheap flights with GO. Conditions were
good and the 12 mile 6000 foot traverse of Macgillycuddy's Reeks was completed
in under 7hours. Great days in the hills!

Veterans World Trophy Results / Bill Gauld Gets a Gold / Scotland hauls in
the medals!
Scottish Veterans made a dramatic impact on the world stage, with a record
nine medal haul in the inaugural World Veterans Mountain Running Trophy.
The Scots had three World Champions, three silver and three Bronze medallists,
and a few near misses in the medals haul.
Colin Donnelly and Sonia Armitage, fresh from the World Trophy last week,
joined Bill Gauld to take Gold in a series of keenly fought races. There
were 600 entries in races covering all veteran classes from 35 (women) and
40 (men) to the over sixties.

TWO BUACHAILLES REPORTS
Here are reports from our competitors
Andy Patience says
"excellent and classic rough course with a slapstick final mile through
deep bog (great for spectators). Should be an annual event albeit with perhaps
a limited field entry due to parking restriction (or min-bus arrangements from
Clachaig/Kingshouse). Adam suggested making it a truly classic long (AL) by extending
it to include all summits/tops of both hills in a traverse of both ridges and
a drop into glen Etive at half way."
Colin Pritchard says
" Steep climbs, wonderful views, awesome descents, knee-deep mud and Christine's
flapjacks - what more can a runner want? "
Garry MacInnes says
"Written race "instructions" were handed out to all competitors
before the start as follows (I think this contains some memorable phrases)":-
"This race is an extreme sport. The course covers very rough and beautiful
ground. There is a lot of loose rock especially on the first ascent and you will
need to take care that you stay clear of rocks dislodged by those above you.
Please avoid closely following people on the scree.
The descent into Lairig Gartain has been soaked by weeks of rain and is very
slippery and steep in parts. There are several hundred metres where walking
or scrambling is needed. Please aim to survive unscathed in preference to
racing on this section.
The course is very arduous and beyond the capabilities of many. It is your
responsibility to ensure that you are fit enough to take part. If in doubt
do not run and seek medical advice." Results (some at least)

CARNETHY DO WELL AT THE WORLDS
Well done to Angela Mudge and Tracey Brindley who came 5th and 17th respectively
in the World Mountain Running Trophy yesterday.
Marbeth Sheill was 28th in the Junior girls race.
Stewart Whitlie finished 83rd in the Mens race today and was 5th Scot.
Geraint Florida-James came 124th running for Northern Ireland. He says "I
didn't know I was going until the Monday before- late call and only 2.5 weeks
training after 4 months off with viral infection. The course was great but
I found it really tough and had to really hang on in on the second lap. I
have heart rate data for myself for the race which makes interesting viewing!!".

CHAMPIONSHIP RESULTS SO FAR
The Ladies have retained the team championship,
so congratulations to them. Moria Stewart has won the Ladies Vets championship,
so again congratulations to her. Moira Stewart and Kate Jenkins can
both win the individual Ladies championship depending on the result
of Meall a'
Bhuachaille. The Men are leading the team championship and need to
prevent Ochils from winning at Meall a' Bhuachille to retain their
championship.
Adam Ward can tie for the Vets championship if he is first vet at Meall
a' Bhuachille. The individual championship is now between Stewart Whitlie
and
Anesti Davenhill of Shettleston.

MARK AND TIM HIGGINBOTTOM WIN THE SWISS KIMM!
Tim and Mark won the elite prize at the MIMM, the Swiss Kimm, at the weekend.
They were 4th at half way, 12 minutes behind the leaders, John Kewley and
Ifor Powell, after leading for half of the first day.
On day two, after some unethical following and an excellent route choice,
they finished 6 minutes in front of Kewley and Powell, a good result for
foot and mouth island.
Mark said " I'm told this is the first British win for some
time, so we're pretty chuffed. Sadly we weren't nearly so impressive
in the post
race
interview for some German outdoor mag: matching kit made of NASA
sourced materials seems the minimum requirement for success; our
top tips involved
mainly food. (Angel Delight? Was ist das?). The Swiss version of
the race is shorter than the Kimm, our times were 5.29 and 5.09,
but over much rougher
surfaces, between 1300 and 2300 metres, and the climbs are steep:
this year the race was over a limestone plateau, and so when the
sun came out
on day
two it was startlingly hot and dry.
I recommend the weekend thoroughly, not least for the pleasure
of sitting outside your tent in the sunshine at the camp (although
the 11am start
on day 1 is good). Also, for you mountain marathoners, it seems
that this year's
de rigeur kit is the Petzl (chicken) Tikka, which is not only several
grammes lighter, but much easier to run with than the old micro."

Caerketton Race
The heavens managed to contain themselves, at least until the prize-giving
. The juniors seemed to enjoy their race: two stopped at the style for a
rest on the way up, and two more on the descent, dizzy from rolling down
the hill. In the senior races the Cumbrians were too Sharp for the locals.
'Arctic' Kitchin won the men's prize for the best loup over the style and
Alison Laws the women s. Senior Results , Junior Results

NORTH BERWICK LAW HILL RACE.
There was a particularly large turnout for the race up the Law despite several
other events on the same evening. Weather was overcast and dry but a bit
too warm, however the race seemed to be over in a flash. The prize giving
took place before the last runner was in, and was so prompt that I missed
it! .

ANGELA IS SECOND IN THE EUROPEAN TROPHY
After the 7th WMRA European Trophy in Cerklje,
Slovenia, Angela says "The
Russian girl, who won, was 4th last year in the Europeans but didn't do the
Worlds. She got away at half way and I tried to go with her. The Belgian
in 3rd has been at the World Trophy as a junior and ran in the senior race
because everyone else was too slow for her. She is only 21 so has plenty
of years left in her, time to retire I think. I was pleased with my run as
I was 50 secs quicker than last year and the course was slippery as hell
as it had thundered in the night, so the going was alot slower. In the men's
race, Monanari (the Italian) was only 2 secs quicker than last year and he
is fitter."
