THE RETURN TO THE HILLS (a letter from the president)
Return of Old Friends - Pentland Hills Access Restrictions
Lifted In line with government and scientific advice all signage, advising
people to keep away
from the Pentland Hills Regional Park because of a risk of spreading foot and
mouth, will be removed from access points and right of ways as from the 14th
June 2001. The Park s advice will still be to keep away from the hills if you
have come from infected areas, although both MAFF and Scottish Executive advice
is that there is no significant risk of walkers and other recreational users
of the countryside bringing F&M into the countryside. It is worth bearing
in mind that the Regional Park has no authority to close public rights of way
independently of the Scottish Executive, and have only been able to advise
people not to go into the hills. Carnethy members have shown praiseworthy understanding
and restraint in heeding that advice. As they return to their traditional stomping
ground members should continue to recognise that many of the farmers
who work the Pentland Hills, with whom we have good relations, believe that
whilst animal movement restrictions continue, access restrictions should remain.
Could all members therefore continue to follow the Comeback Code ? From discussions
with a spokesman for Pentland Regional Park and others it is understood that
there will be no announcement of this changeother than the provision of advice
to any telephone enquiries. Park Rangers will still be promoting the fact that
access to the hills is subject to some restriction, encouraging hill users
to use certain access points only and actively reinforcing that advice through
their presence on the hill and at access points. Compared with the publicity
given to the closure of the Pentlands it is unfortunate that there will
be no more formal and public announcement of their reopening other than
by word of mouth and mediums such as the Carnethy web page and newsletter.
Some old signage may still be present on some parts of the hills, as it will
take a few days for Pentland Rangers to remove them from all areas. Should
you come across such signage please ignore it or if you want to facilitate
the change in access you could help the Rangers by removing them. Nick

ADAM WINS HIS FIRST RACE AS A VET
Another Carnethy vet to add to the collection. Adam Ward celebrated his 40th
at the weekend with a quick five miler around Haddington. He was hoping to
make his vets debut at a more epic race like Duddon, but with the F&M
restrictions limiting hill races (he searched high and low for one) he had
to make do with the Haddington '5'.
Haddington is a good 5 miler, as it combines hills, countryside and the dreaded
roads, so whilst in pain you can still appreciate the hedgerows etc. Adam
who was taking this races seriously, rested up the previous night only drinking
a glass and a half of wine, and celebrated his b'day with a go faster hair
cut at dawn. This seemed to work as he was off with the leaders from the
gun passing the first mile marker in 5 minutes 12 seconds. From then on he
was flying and managed to come home in 8th place overall and first vet in
around 26 minutes 40 seconds.
He now has a new pair of trainers to his name and can join the giddy heights
of those like Spenco who can boast of winning their first competitive race
as a vet!

GOAT FELL RACE REPORT Keith
Burns

On a warm spring day with a cool breeze on the summit, Carnethy Hill Racers
won the team prize on Goat Fell. The racing club had a team of 9 out, with
Bill Gauld and Willie Mykura representing Carnethy Hill Runners. There was
a record turn out of 135 finishers, numbers being swelled by English runners
up for some long awaited racing. Angela smashed the women's record with a time
of 1-26-21 for 11th place and 3rd counter in the team after Stewart (4th) and
Brad (10th). Adam succumbed to over-enthusiasm in a frisky start which fizzled
out as the going got rougher and steeper. Slippery conditions on the summit
slabs led winner Morgan Donnelly to a slide and dislocated finger, but this
didn't prevent him from opening an impressive lead of almost a minute and a
half from Dan Whitehead of Cosmics. Supporting team members further back had
their own battles with Nicholas and Willie M separated by 18 seconds. Alison
and Keith were 9 seconds apart after a battle on the descent which left Alison
lame from blistered heels.
