Boundaries of Edinburgh

This is a social event where we run the 33(ish) miles round the town of Edinburgh, pretty much following the 1921 boundaries.  The run starts at Hillend (the Steading) and this year will go anti-clockwise over old railway lines and dump tips down to Joppa, past Portobello (bacon roll stop) then the flat plod round to Cramond (pint and crisps stop).  Next we head up the glen and the park to reach the east side of the airport, then run up into the Pentlands for the final leg as it's getting dark back down to the Steading (yep, you've guessed it beer and food stop).  There will as always be a bike option led by Keith Burns if you fancy that as an alternative.

The plan is for the runners to leave from the Steading at 09:30 Saturday 10th March, possibly with the cyclists leaving a little later so they can have fun chasing after the runners.

It's also possible to run parts of this if you can't face the entire thing, more details/ estimated timing will be available closer to the time once I've recce'd the route to see what's changed for this year.

You can get an overview of the run by looking at last years report

Sunday 25th March

East Lothian 3 Peaks Duathlon

Ideal for the novice, family, or those with serious intent.  Solo, team duo, tandem, cyclo X and all-run categories.  Good for ultra-training.  Team pairings will be arranged where needed.

Confirm your interest and you will receive detailed instructions and handicap (appeals procedure available).

Details:

40km with 930m ascent. Starts at 240m asl and finishes at 45m asl.  So net downhill (and usually downwind).

First away at 10 am. Others will be handicapped based on past performance. Handicaps will be posted before the event.

Categories for solo, pair, tandem, cyclo-cross (only cyclo-cross cat. have to take bikes up the 3 hills).

Detailed navigation skill on the hill and on the road will be worth as much as strength and speed.

The Route:

Start at Blinkbonny Wood (NT 541643), south of Gifford. Run to Lammer Law summit and back by any route. Cycle to car park at foot of Traprain Law. Run to summit and back by any route. Cycle to car park at base of North Berwick Law. Run to summit and back by any route. You must start each run from the timekeeper at the transition so that we know where you are and we can record the splits.

The route is totally unmarked or marshalled. You will need to navigate both on the hill and on the road. Most of the roads are narrow (some are single track) with blind bends on hills, mud, cowshit and a few mad motorists. Ideally, you should arrange your own road support (easy for teams of two).

The Alternative John Muir Way and Tour of East Lothian

Forget the official John Muir Way.  It’s rubbish because it misses the best bits of coast line.  Try the Alternative John Muir Way.

53km of Outstanding East Lothian coastline beaches, boulders and cliffs then return by River Tyne and Garleton Hills to Aberlady Bay.  Lunch provided at East Linton after 32km.  The last 21km can be done by (optional) mountain bikes with barely competent riders.  You can also cycle the whole route by taking occasional diversions (map will be provided).   If you want to run it at serious training pace (an ideal opportunity for spring ultra enthusiasts) you can start later, chase us, and arrange to rendezvous for lunch at East Linton.  This year there’s the option of a different post-lunch route using the new footpath extended along the River Tyne before climbing into the Garleton Hills.

Mountain bikes will be collected at the start and delivered for pick up at Ravensheugh beach where we leave the coast.  Some have run or biked the whole distance (rideable variations to shoreline route available).

Sag wagon provided so that you can drop out, drop in, or avoid sections.

Map and guide provided.
