At lunchtime I was in South Wales
looking out at mist and rain, but as I sped past Carlisle on the west-coast
line, the weather improved to a fine windy and sunny evening, tempting
29 runners out to Red Moss. A record number for this year’s handicaps,
and it was good to see a large field after previous poor turnouts. The
route took us on an anti-clockwise circuit of West Kip, East Kip and Scald
Law, with a longish run in and out. A lovely route and a welcome return
to the Pentlands.
The excellent visibility meant we
could see the runners far ahead which we were trying to catch, and a lot
of chasing went on. But no one managed to catch Serena who made use of
a good handicap on her first run of the season, to finish first. However,
if Joanne Thin had turned up in time for her start, she would have won….
Meanwhile, Stewart easily ran the fastest time, while visitor Didier Kmopf
received a severe handicap from Gordon, found the going tough, and had
to be rescued by car. Kate kindly donated a bottle of wine, an unwanted
race prize, which we gave out as a spot prize to the person finishing
closest to their prediction. This went to Alun, who finished just 19 secs
under his predicted time.
We retired to the Johnsburn in Balerno
for excellent beer and rather overpriced food.
