KB HANDICAP 2001 RESULTS

On a fine soft night some twenty of
the Carnethy faithful turned up to run the Kings Buildings Handicap whilst half
a dozen more came to spectate, socialise and generally make nuisances of themselves.
With
Willie Mykura elsewhere there was more than the usual whinging about the unfairness
of handicaps, timing and life
in general but all to no avail. Willie Gibson had reckoned that this particular
race was the equivalent of half a Carnethy 5 and so estimated that he would
run it in about 34-35 minutes. Our handicappers timings estimated that
Willie would run it in 32 minutes. In proving himself right, Willie was once
again beaten comfortably by Gordon Cameron who in turn just failed to catch
Cali Ingham in the run in to the finish.
Ian
Forrest, rather unsportingly passed his wife Margaret as she courteously showed
him the way through the gorse on
the Braids and went on to win easily being a minute and a half ahead of Jane
Robertson who would have won if shed only started on time and been
less busy gabbing elsewhere.
Willie
Mykuras estimates of the abilities
of his clubmates proved to be optimistic in that more than half the runners
took over 5 minutes longer to run round the course than he had envisaged,
with Joanne and Cali obviously stopping to admire the view for a further
five minutes or so somewhere along the line. However, in their bids to get
back before everyone sloped off to the pub some of the runners clocked some
impressive times, with Adam Ward taking just over 29 minutes and Stewart
Whitlie just over 30. Andy Spenceley clocked just over 31 minutes but no
one was sure whether to be impressed with this or not as he claimed at the
start that he wasnt really running.
My thanks to Sarah Macdonald and Ronnie Gallagher
for their help with the timing and recording and to Hilary for driving round
the course to take the photographs.
