Corstorphine Hill Handicap 17thApril 2002

It was a fine night for a short fast
run over Corstorphine Hill, with the weather being still and cool, and the
ground very dry underfoot. I arrived slightly late which raised the level
of excitement a little when the first two runners were set off before the
time sheets arrived. The race followed a cross-country route around the
perimeter of the hill, visiting all the gates into the park and the Tower
on top, with a chance to visit the zoo on the way out and back. Three visitors
joined the 18 club stalwarts who turned out. Several runners had some difficulty
finding their way round this new route and some detours were taken despite
carrying Willie’s dotted-line maps. The new course caused me a little
difficulty in estimating the times, which turned out to be slightly long.
However there was much chasing on route and tight finishing as runners tried
to follow those who knew the route, testing the abilities of Moira and Adam
who were recording the finish times. Bill Gauld provided able support on
route, and plentiful oranges at the end. As darkness fell we retired to
‘The Rainbow’ for excellent refreshment, some of us even enjoyed
the big-screen football over our dinner table.
